Overall Summary

Overall summary will go here.

Chapter-wise Notes

Chapter 1 : The Learning Begins

"Everything in life worth achieving requires practice. In fact, life itself is nothing more than one long practice session, an endless effort of refining our motions. When the proper mechanics of practice are understood, the task of learning something new becomes a stress-free experience of joy and calmness, a process which settles all areas in your life and promotes proper perspective on all of life's difficulties."

  • The same rules of practice and our internal workings apply to all skills.
  • Multitasking limits our ability to focus on one thing when we want to; it is akin to a chariot driven by four horses pulling in different directions.
  • The author shares their mindset regarding learning the piano, exploring learning philosophies, and working as a piano technician and builder—emphasizing the value of repeating mundane skills.

Chapter 2 : Process, Not Product

"A paradox of life: The problem with patience and discipline is that developing each of them requires both of them."

  • Understand the mechanics of practice (how it works) and actively shift your goal towards the process rather than the product.
  • Practice requires awareness and will. It is the deliberate repetition of a process with the intention of reaching a specific goal.
  • Being process-oriented helps avoid anxiety and keeps your focus on the present moment.
  • Make the process your primary goal, and use the overall goal as a rudder to steer your efforts.
  • Be deliberate: have a clear intention about what you want to accomplish and remain aware of that intention.

Chapter 3 : It's How You Look at It

"As we attempt to understand ourselves and our struggles with life's endeavors, we may find peace in the observation of a flower. Ask yourself: at what point in a flower's life, from seed to full bloom, does it reach perfection?"

  • Ads, grades, and even peer-compeition, all push us towards goals, and not processes
  • Like the flower, we are perfect when where we are and absorbed in what we are doing right at the moment. - this brings us peace and happiness, which we can't get via acquisition of any material object or cultural status. 9it frees us from boredome, disappintment, stess, impatinet from past/perf level.
  • Perfection is not static, it's fleeting and moving away, so path should be true authentic and to happiness.
  • work or not-work, all is the game of mind. trick mind by saying - let's do it for half-an-hour and then see...

Chapter 4 : Creating the Habits we Desire

"Habits are learnt. Choose them wisely."
